If it is low on refrigerant, the refrigerant went somewhere, and topping it off without finding out where only buys a few weeks. Warm air can also come from a failed compressor clutch, a blocked condenser, an electrical fault or a stuck blend door, none of which a can of refrigerant will fix. Here is what the symptoms usually point to.
Often a system that is low on refrigerant or a compressor that is cycling off. It tends to get worse on the hottest afternoons, when you need it most.
Points to airflow across the condenser: a cooling fan that is not running or a condenser packed with debris. Stop-and-go is where it shows.
On dual-zone systems, a blend door actuator that has failed or lost calibration. The refrigerant side can be perfectly healthy.
A clogged cabin air filter or a blower motor problem. The air may be cold, there just is not enough of it.
Moisture and debris on the evaporator. A new cabin air filter and an evaporator cleaning usually take care of it.
Grinding, rattling or squealing when the compressor kicks on can mean a failing compressor or clutch. Have it checked before it takes the belt with it.
Vent temperature, system pressures, compressor operation, fan operation and airflow get checked before anything is added or replaced. That tells us whether the problem is refrigerant, a mechanical part or an electrical fault.
If the system is low, we find the leak. Common spots are the condenser, which sits at the front of the vehicle in the path of road debris, along with hose fittings, seals and the compressor. You hear what we found and what it takes to fix it.
A proper recharge removes what is left in the system, pulls a vacuum to confirm it holds and to boil off moisture, then fills it with the exact amount of refrigerant and oil your vehicle is specified for. Overfilling hurts cooling just as underfilling does.
A dirty cabin air filter chokes airflow and feeds odors into the cabin. It gets checked on every A/C visit and replaced when it needs to be.
Most current Ram, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler models use R-1234yf refrigerant, while older ones use R-134a. They are not interchangeable, they need different service equipment, and R-1234yf systems are sensitive to contamination. The label under the hood tells you which your vehicle has. It is the main reason a DIY recharge kit is a bad idea on a newer vehicle.
On models with engine stop-start, the A/C compressor is engine-driven, so the system may restart the engine at a stop or skip the auto-stop entirely when the cabin needs cooling. On a 100-degree day that is normal behavior, not a fault.
The Pacifica, Grand Cherokee L, Wagoneer and Durango cool a lot of space, and some trims run a separate rear evaporator with extra lines to the back of the vehicle. More lines and fittings mean more places to check when cooling drops off.
Removable tops and doors, trail dust and water crossings all work against the system. A condenser clogged with dirt or a bent fin after a trail day shows up as weak cooling in traffic.
Air conditioning works hardest when the air around the condenser is hottest, and summer afternoons in Pomona, Ontario and Rancho Cucamonga regularly pass 100 degrees. Add stop-and-go on the 10 or the 60, where very little air moves across the condenser, and a system that is slightly low or partly blocked stops keeping up.
A vehicle parked in the sun all day starts with a cabin far hotter than the outside air, and the system has to pull it down from there. Santa Ana winds blow dust and debris into the condenser and the cabin air filter. A long climb up the Cajon Pass or out toward the desert with the A/C on full adds heat and load on top of that. If your A/C feels weaker than it did last summer, have it checked before the next heat wave, not during one.

The A/C cools the cabin. The engine cooling system, with its radiator, coolant and water pump, keeps the engine from overheating. If the temperature gauge climbs or you see coolant under the vehicle, that is a cooling system problem, not an A/C one, and it needs attention right away. The two share airflow at the front of the vehicle, so a failed cooling fan can affect both, and we check for that during every A/C diagnosis.

We do not recommend it. Store kits cannot measure how much refrigerant is already in the system, so overfilling is common, some contain sealants that can damage components and service equipment, and none of them fix the leak.
Moisture and debris collect on the evaporator and in the cabin air filter. Replacing the cabin air filter and cleaning the evaporator usually clears it up.
On models with engine stop-start, the A/C compressor is driven by the engine. When the cabin needs cooling, the system may skip the auto-stop or restart the engine to keep the A/C running. In hot weather that is normal.
